In our previous posts on the HTML Meta Title tag and the HTML Meta Description tag, I wrote about their importance in relationship to search engine optimization. Both the meta title and meta description are important, but they are not the only important HTML tags. The header tags, H1-H6 are also important, especially the H1 and H2 tags.
HTML Heading Tags
Using the H1 and H2 tags in your content enhances both the readability and the ability of the search engines to understand what the content is about. These tags can be used to reinforce the main keywords or introduce subtle variations and long-tail keyword targets. Heading tags may not be applicable in shorter posts, but in longer posts can be used nicely to enhance your keyword targeting.
Generally, you want to use HTML tags for their appropriate purposes. It is only after your determine whether or not they are appropriate, you enhance them with target keywords.
Consistent Use of HTML Heading Tags
If you follow these practices on a consistent and regular basis, your site will be rewarded by improved search engine rankings. If you make this a practice, it will be second nature and you will be developing your site in the right way without even thinking about it.
